Valves are available in a remarkable array of sizes and types, their variety driven by a combination of diverse application requirements and manufacturers willing to fulfill those requirements. One application subset, of which some knowledge is useful, is the requirement for accurate and reliable control involving very low flow rates.

The Low Flow Division of Jordan Valve specializes in control valves and pressure regulators for processes where very low flow rates are a requirement. The company's products cross the boundaries of many industry sectors, with variants applicable to many uses.

  • Back Pressure
  • Chemical Injection or Metering
  • Flow Control
  • Corrosive Media
  • Cryogenic
  • High Pressure
  • High Temperature
  • Mixing or Diverting
  • Natural and Industrial Gas
  • Offshore
  • Pilot Plant
  • Pressure Reducing
  • Steam
  • Research
  • Zero Fugitive Emission
A number of installation and operation considerations may apply to these specialized valves that are different or more stringent than for larger flow rated valves.
  • Clearance within the trim may be very small, to provide precise control of low flow rates. Valves should generally be applied to clean fluids.
  • When installed, all piping should be properly cleaned, flushed, or blown out to remove all foreign matter.
  • A line strainer of particularly fine mesh, in accordance with installation instructions for the particular valve in use, may be required for protection  and to maintain proper operation.
  • Other instructions that may apply specifically to an application or a valve product should be followed to assure best performance and longevity

Control Valve Designed for On/Off Operation

Not every fluid control application needs a modulating valve. In some cases, a two state control algorithm, flow or no flow, is the best solution. Opting for a less complex control method can deliver up front benefits of lower first cost and easier implementation. Continuing savings in maintenance time and the ease of understanding the control sequence accrue for the life of the installation.

The Mark 76 On/Off Control Valves, from Jordan Valve, are an advantageous choice for applications as described above. They exhibit very rapid opening and closing times with the short stroke sliding gate design. The pneumatically operated valve can be configured to open when pressure is applied, or to close. The counterforce spring returns the valve to its normal state when no air pressure is applied to the actuator. This allows the valve to be controlled using a small solenoid valve.

The sliding gate design does not use soft seats, but delivers tight shutoff and is suitable for steam service. The low air pressure requirements and short stroke required by the sliding gate contribute to the longevity of the Mark 76 in control applications.

Controlling Steam Heat Trace Lines

Steam is a commonly employed heat source for freeze protection or other heat tracing of process lines. Other than being an efficient heat transfer medium, steam provides the advantage of not being a possible source of ignition, extremely useful in areas where the presence of flammable vapors is a possibility.

Regardless of the method used to deliver heat, all heat trace operations consume energy. Control of the heat trace operation not only saves cost through energy conservation, but prevents potential deterioration, through overheating, of materials that may be in proximity to the heated line.

When steam is used, a well designed temperature regulator can provide control of steam flow through the heating system. Specially adapted for heat tracing operations, the Jordan Valve Mark 86 senses ambient temperature and adjusts steam flow as the ambient temperature changes. The completely self-contained unit includes temperature sensing element, diaphragm, and a sliding gate valve to regulate steam flow.

Sliding Gate Valve Trim for Maximized Flow Control

Fluid flow control in a process can present a number of challenges, large and small. In addition to selecting a properly sized control valve, your choice of trim design can contribute noticeably to overall positive performance. One candidate for fluid flow control is the sliding gate valve.

The trim of a sliding gate valve essentially consists of a fixed disc and a movable plate installed directly in the flow path. The disc and plate have precisely located and sized perforations, slots, or other openings. The valve actuation mechanism slides the plate across the face of the disc, progressively changing the alignment of the openings in the plate and fixed disc. This type of design can bring some benefits to the process and user.

  • Short stroke length provides fast response, reduces wear on packing and diaphragm, allows for a compact installed assembly
  • Straight-through flow pattern reduces turbulence, noise, erosion, valve chatter, and cavitation
  • Ease of maintenance, with fewer trim components that are easily changed
  • Self cleaning, self lapping seats
The video below provides a clear illustration of how the sliding gate valve trim works, through animation and exploded views of the valve components. Share your fluid flow control challenges with a valve specialist and combine your process expertise with their product application knowledge for an effective solution.
